It does not look, as well as left tackle D.J. Humphries has played this season, that he will get love from the fans in Pro Bowl voting. In the final update before voting closes Thursday, right tackle Kelvin Beachum is in the top 10 among offensive tackles, but Humphries is not.
Humphries is having his best season, and is currently ranked fifth among all tackles in the NFL by PFF's grading system while playing the most snaps of any tackle. It certainly shows that the Cards' decision to sign him to a big contract extension early last offseason (before COVID became a thing, which seems more like three years ago to be honest) was a very good idea. History often shows that Pro Bowl recognition can often come one year later than a player might deserve (and often, go on a year or two longer than it should once the player has a "name.") So perhaps Humphries is going to end up in that ramp-up period in 2020.
Humphries smiles about the topic. He knows name recognition matters even among the voting by players and coaches. But he "100 percent" still wants to be a Pro Bowler at some point.
"I talk the talk every year I don't make the Pro Bowl about it being a popularity vote but I definitely want to be one of the popular kids," Humphries said. "I'm not going to act like I don't. All the guys that I've seen the guys be successful in that life, they've gotten there just by going out and playing good football and sticking to that technique and playing at a high level. That's the only part of the deal I can hold up. However it plays out it plays out.
"But I definitely want to be one of the popular kids. Don't be confused."
