This Is the Most Popular Design Style in Every State, According to Instagram - HouseBeautiful.com

Instagram is far more than just a platform to connect with friends. It's an epicenter of ideas, a digital looking glass into the lives of our favorite stars, and a message board for big-name brands to keep us in the loop. Think of how many tutorials you've watched or products you learned about for the first time just by scrolling through Instagram!

If you've ever posted a photo of your home on Instagram (guilty!), you probably threw in a few relevant hashtags to help those with similar interests find your post. Maybe you captioned your picture with hashtags like #bohodecor, #cottagestyle, or #midcenturymodern. Or maybe you've searched for those particular tags on the app to collect ideas to help style your own digs.

In April, the team at Angie's List commissioned the America's #Instahome Study to learn using more about the current interior design trends that are taking over America’s homes. Since Instagram is such an influential tool in design, the team looked into how specific style hashtags used on the platform varied by geographic location. First, they tracked the most popular design hashtag in each state. Second, they tracked which states were more likely to share photos of their homes on social media. Would someone in California be as inclined to share a photo of his/her home just as much as someone who lives in Delaware? Here's what the research showed.

The Most Popular Interior Design Hashtags in the United States

The study revealed that the three most popular design hashtags used in the United States are respectively #coastalliving, #midcenturymodern, and #rusticdecor.

Using the chart above, you'll be able to pinpoint the most popular home style hashtag used on Instagram in your state. As you can see, many states shared the same hashtag. The most popular hashtag in the country was #coastalliving, which won over Instagram users in 18 states. Of these 18 states all border the ocean, but most were located on the East Coast. Coming in second as the most-used design hashtag in the country is #midcenturymodern. This hashtag is the most used design hashtag in 16 states, most of which are in the Midwest and West Coast. Think: exposed beams, wood-paneled walls, nods to nature, and open-concept. If you've watched Mad Men, you've definitely got a glimpse of the style. While this design had its prime during the mid-1900s, it has been making a comeback in more recent times, especially amongst millennials.

The third most used design hashtag in the country is #rusticdecor—which was also the top hashtag used for eight states. Among these states are more mountainous regions like Wyoming and Montana. While you don't necessarily have to own a log cabin to partake in the trend, families who dwell in mountain-heavy regions tend to opt for handmade, natural looking decor to pepper around their homes. We break down what rustic style actually means here.

Some states had their own unique tag, such as Vermont, where Instagram users have popularized #cottagestyle, or North Dakota, where Instagram users love #bohodecor. Instagram users in Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and the District of Colombia fancied the tag #traditionalhome.

The States That Love to Share Their Homes on Instagram

Almost 40 percent of interior design content posted on Instagram in the United States comes from users residing in California, Florida, and Texas.

Angie's List

The second part of the study looked into which states were posting the most about interior design. To do this, the team focused on ten popular hashtags which users might tag a home picture with.

The hashtags were as follows: #midcenturymodern, #bohodecor, #industrialstyle, #cottagestyle, #scandinaviandesign, #modernhome, #shabbychic, #rusticdecor, #coastalliving, and #traditionalliving.

The study deduced that California had the most interior design-obsessed Instagram users, accounting for over 10,082 uses of analyzed hashtags. Florida came in second-place, with around 4,606 uses of the hashtags. In third place was Texas, with 3,222 uses of the analyzed hashtags. These three states account for almost 40 percent of all interior design posts on Instagrams.

It's no surprise that California topped the charts, as San Francisco is one of the design capitals of the U.S. and Los Angeles is home to the third-highest concentration of professional designers in the country. Compared to states like South Dakota, with 42 uses, and North Dakota, with 38 uses, it's more clear which states are passionate about interior design on Instagram.

Bottom line: While this study gives a look into the popular design styles from state-to-state, remember that these findings were all pulled from Instagram data. Photos without hashtags were not counted, plus, we most take into account that not all home owners share photos of their home on social media. Either way, know that you can decorate your home whichever way you want. A nautical-themed home in the Midwest!? We'd visit.
