Alabama college students tend to stay pretty close to home.
According to data from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, most of the state’s high school graduates stay in state for college. And it’s not just that - the most popular college among residents in nearly every Alabama county is also usually the closest.
Troy University, in Alabama’s Wiregrass region in the southeastern part of the state, was the most popular school for 16 of Alabama’s 67 counties in fall of 2020, the most recent semester for which data was available.

The next closest public, four-year university - Jacksonville State University, in Calhoun County in eastern Alabama - was the most popular school choice in 10 counties.
For the most part it’s common for most Alabama students in a given area to stay close to home for school. The University of Alabama at Birmingham was the most popular choice in four Birmingham-area counties. Similarly, The University of Alabama in Huntsville was the most popular choice in Madison County, the home of Huntsville, plus three neighboring counties.
Even The University of Alabama and Auburn University, the largest schools in the state, were only the most popular with a handful of nearby counties. Alabama was the most popular in six counties, all of them near Tuscaloosa County. Meanwhile, Auburn was most popular in only four, though it earned enough students in Wilcox County, in the state’s Black Belt region and quite far from Auburn’s campus, to be the most popular there. But Wilcox County had a grand total of just 141 students enrolled at Alabama 4-year universities in 2020, and Auburn earned 20 of them.
But while most students in nearly every county stayed close to home, plenty of students still went elsewhere, especially to those two flagship schools.
If you look at top five most popular choices in each county, both Alabama and Auburn landed on the list in 55 of the state’s 67 counties, and at least one of the two universities made the top five in all 67 counties.

In terms of total in-state students, no school had more than Auburn, which had more than 14,000 undergraduate Alabamians enrolled in fall 2020. That’s about 16% of all Alabama residents enrolled in public 4-year in-state schools.
The University of Alabama, which has been shifting toward out-of state students for much of the last decade, had around 13,000 in-state undergraduates in 2020.
Only one other school - the University of Alabama at Birmingham, had more than 10,000 total enrolled undergraduates from Alabama in 2020. UAB had nearly 11,500 such students.
