The Fox News Party has all sirens blazing about how Democrats and the left supposedly hate America because of “cancel culture,” “Critical Race Theory” and other right-wing bogeymen. They claim that liberals and Democrats don’t represent “real America” and that they represent a suffering silent majority of true patriots.
So it’s more than fitting on this Fourth of July here in actual America, on planet Earth in this reality free from the Fox News distortion field, to point out that President Biden remains highly popular with the majority of Americans. An Ipsos poll from July 1st shows Biden’s approval at 52% positive to 42% negative. Today, a Post-ABC poll shows Biden with an 8-point approval rating while also cracking the 50% barrier.
It’s worth noting that least as of April, Donald Trump’s favorability rating was deep underwater: only 32% approved of him among all American respondents, while 55% were unfavorable. And Donald Trump remains the standard-bearer for a Republican Party.
The Donald Trump faction just lost the last election by over 7 million votes. The Fox News crowd proceeded to lose the Georgia Senate runoff elections–both of them. Democrats currently represent over 41 million more people in the Senate. Democrats, as usual, won the popular vote in House races. And Democrats have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential races.
It’s pretty hard to argue that the faction that continues to win the support of the majority of Americans is somehow anti-American. Wanting the country to truly live up to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights is and has always been a core part of the American tradition. As Thomas Jefferson said:
But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”
Thomas Jefferson was a barbarous ancestor himself–and would ironically be pleased, I think, to hear us excoriate him for his many and awful sins. That’s the whole point. Nothing is more American and in keeping with the most optimistic and benign of America’s founding ideals than to continue to ensure that life, liberty and pursuit of happiness are available for everyone in equal measure while noting just how far we still fall short of that goal.
The faction of conservative “Constitutional originalists” and the forces seeking to maintain status quo inequalities on the basis of class, race, gender, religion and orientation are the ones who betray what is good about America, and reinforce its foundational sins.
And, it’s important to note once again, they are deeply unpopular with the majority of Americans today. De facto, they are the ones out of step with the country.
So on this July 4th feel free to celebrate the country while also criticizing how much work we have yet to do to create true social and economic equity. That position is in the majority. That position is the true spirit of what is best about America. And that will remain true no matter what the unpatriotic and unpopular grifters in the cult of Fox News and Donald Trump try to claim.
