Popular YouTube channel Yes Theory releases video spotlighting North Dakota, Gov. Burgum | INFORUM - INFORUM

The 23-minute video released on Sunday, June 27, by Yes Theory, a YouTube channel with more than 6.7 million subscribers, follows the adventures of video creators Thomas Brag and Eric Tabach as they travel to the Peace Garden State under the direction of a robot "with a mind of its own."

Earlier this month, the Los Angeles-based YouTubers put themselves at the mercy of a complex artificial intelligence model operated by a friend with a background in software development. The computer-based language generator, GPT-3, has "absorbed the internet," Brag said, and can spit out responses informed by the information it has artificially learned when given inputs and parameters by a user.

Brag and company told the model they were YouTube producers with an emphasis on impromptu adventures and asked for video ideas. The model pitched Brag and Tabach on going to the least-visited state in America, so the duo hopped on a flight to Bismarck and awaited the robot's next command.

The following day, the model delivered its mission for Brag and Tabach: find the governor and get him to do something he's never tried. With some help from Gov. Doug Burgum's son Joe and Forum publisher Bill Marcil Jr., who appears twice in the video, Brag and Tabach arranged to meet the governor a few days later in Fargo.

The video producers filmed their ensuing travels through North Dakota, which included sleeping in a stranger's home, watching the Medora Musical and spotting bison in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Brag and Tabach finally arrived in Fargo to meet Burgum, and after a long conversation with the former tech executive, the YouTubers joined the governor downtown for a tightly contested ax-throwing match at Rough Cut Social.

Brag told Forum News Service he really enjoyed seeing the state, noting it felt "like we got adopted by North Dakota." Burgum praised Brag's entrepreneurial spirit and said he identified with the group's mission of seeking discomfort.

The governor also said getting the message out about North Dakota to the younger demographic that watches Brag's channel is "fantastic."

"People watch this channel and that's a group that we'd love to have them understand that North Dakota is a place where you can seek adventure and grow and learn," Burgum said.

Top comments on the video indicate Burgum's hopes of promoting tourism in the state have succeeded. One commenter wrote, "this is the most publicity the state of north dakota has ever gotten," while another said, "This is the best advertisement for North Dakota I’ve ever seen."
