New York limits parking at popular Adirondacks' lookout for Roaring Brook Falls - Times Union

KEENE. VALLEY — The state Departments of Environmental Conservation and Transportation have put in further parking restrictions on traffic-clogged parts of an Adirondacks High Peaks road that have grown increasingly popular with hikers in recent years.

Weeks after the institution of a parking reservation system for the Adirondack Mountain Reserve area a few minutes from here, the state has imposed 15-minute limits for the Roaring Brook Falls overlook area along Route 73. Officials also have put in parking delineators, or metal stakes, along shoulders in the area to keep cars from parking there.

The stretch of roadway had been too crowded with parked cars and created a traffic hazard for motorists and hikers walking along the road, officials said.

“The Roaring Brook Falls lookout has been posted for 15-minute parking only to allow for its intended use as a scenic overlook. The delineators will help to prevent unsafe parking and reduce pedestrian traffic to help address ongoing public safety issues,” DEC said in a prepared statement. “These efforts will be monitored and adjustments made in the future if adverse effects are identified.”

The parking restrictions were first reported in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Adirondack Explorer.

This stretch of Route 73 is next to a number of trails leading to the Adirondacks’ increasingly crowded High Peaks including Giant, Upper and Lower Wolfjaws as well as Rooster Comb mountains.

For the last several years, officials have worried about the hikers walking along the narrow stretches of highway toward the various trailheads. As the High Peaks have grown in popularity, back country travelers have found themselves jockeying for parking spaces, which often are filled by 6 or 7 in the morning.

“In recent years pedestrian traffic, illegal parking, and roadside stopping along Route 73 have created a dangerous environment for hikers and motorists alike,” the agency added.

In March, DEC and the private Mountain Reserve said they would require parking reservations for their 70-car lot from May 1 through Oct. 31.

The reservation system applies to vehicles dropping off hikers as well, although each car can carry up to six hikers. That impacts trails to places like Rainbow Falls, Indian Head, as well as Noonmark and Round mountains.

For the past several summers forest rangers have been patrolling the roads, offering warnings and writing tickets for cars that are illegally parked along the narrow roads. The area this past summer was particularly busy as COVID-weary hikers who might normally travel to other states stayed in New York while seeking some outdoor recreation.

Environmentalists have also worried that the heavy foot traffic on the area’s steep rocky trails will intensify erosion as well as endanger delicate plant life in alpine zones that are above the tree line.

DEC also has encouraged hikers to visit less-traveled areas in the vast Adirondack Park.
