BLOOMINGTON (HOI) - Tazewell County has a much higher percentage of home schoolers this fall, as does the McLean County region, to include DeWitt, Livingston and Logan Counties.
In those areas, the home school group is at least twice as large during this ongoing pandemic.
"I was little taken aback. I anticipated we would see an increase. But, certainly to have over twice as many already to start the year than we typically have in an entire year was certainly eye opening," said Mark Jontry, Regional Superintendent for Office #17. "It shouldn't be all that surprising because it's, you know, uncertain times and parents are making decisions based on what they think is best for their kids. And, I think, partly what's going on in the parent's lives relative to job and their availability to be with their kids. So, all those things come into play."
In that regional office, Unit 5, Prairie Central and Blue Ridge had the highest numbers of home schoolers.
But even so, the total - 221 as of Oct. 7 - represents less than one percent of the total student population of roughly 27,000 students.
In ROE #53, to include Havana, East Peoria, Washington and Morton schools, Superintendent Jeff Ekena tells 25News they have 15 students who have filed for home schooling, which is not required in state law.
But with roughly 31,000 total students, that is a fraction of the student body.
It does though, represent a significant increase over previous years, where Ekena says they would typically see 1-2 students choosing home school.
