A home furnishings retailer with a focus on sustainably-sourced, solid-wood pieces and distinctive home decor is relocating one store and opening another in Bethlehem.
It’s all part of an updated growth strategy for Domaci, which means “Home” in Czech and is owned by Warren and Derrick Clark of Bethlehem. The pair launched a larger location in January 2018 at 21 E. 3rd St. after opening their original store on Main Street in 2016. They began initially in 2015 as an online retailer before opening the first brick-and-mortar shop. Last year, the owners partnered with co-owner Rebecca Additington, to open Ville & Rue by Domaci at 101 NQ in downtown Lancaster.
They now have their sights set on the future 24,000-square-foot Riverport Market, 17 W. 2nd St. in South Bethlehem. The market -- once open in spring 2020 -- is expected to feature 35 vendors, a demonstration kitchen, brew tasting room and an anchor restaurant.
The Clarks plan to both join the market by relocating some of their furniture and home decor pieces from the Third Street location and return to their original roots along Main Street with the creation of “Domaci Studio.” The design studio will offer Domaci’s core home furnishings, as well as lighting, flooring and textiles. The owners say the vision is to consolidate everything the Third Street location had into a more intimate setting, where guests can enjoy a more “cozy, home-like” feel.
“Main Street will be a new concept focusing primarily on our home furnishings collections and our design services,” Derrick Clark said. “While staying true to the Domaci brand, the Main Street location won’t have the full product assortment like customers will find at the Market location.”
At the studio, patrons will receive expanded design services. This can run the gamut from a team helping patrons choose color schemes to creating gallery walls to deciding on simple room refreshes to embarking on larger, refurbishing projects. Guests will start the process online with the studio’s website and virtual showroom, and then extend that experience to the design studio or into their homes with Domaci’s in-home design services.
“In this virtual world, we’ve crafted a special category of design service with our virtual design experience,” Derrick Clark said. “So now, no matter where you are in the country, we’re able to customize a design experience that fits your needs."
He added that with the growth of Domaci’s design business, the pair decided to break apart the shop concepts, which they say will allow for a stronger focus on its furniture line, which at times in the past had been overshadowed by the store’s smaller, grab-and-go offerings and gift-ables. The studio store is expected to open sometime in June.
Additionally, to its furnishings and home decor at the market, Domaci also will be offering an expanded selection of dinnerware, serve-ware, and food and kitchen items. New product categories, such as all-natural cleaning products and accessories, personal care items, and seasonal products, will be carefully curated and added to current merchandise to help make Riverport Market a one-stop shop and destination for patrons searching for an alternative to traditional big box supermarkets, owners said.
The shop also will continue to host fun and informative events and workshops in its new market space, they said. Prices range anywhere from a few dollars for a greeting card to thousands for furniture pieces. The brick-and-mortar store in the past was known for paying homage locally with T-shirts depicting Musikfest mug graphics and Bethlehem pennants.
“Brick and mortar retail is not dead," said Warren Clark. “The challenge in today’s ever changing retail environment is cutting through all the noise, and defining your focus and offerings by creating an individualized experience for each person who walks through our doors."
The Clarks said the goal in the changes was to both strengthen the store’s financial performance as well as its commitment to Bethlehem and the burgeoning SouthSide Arts District.
“We believe in the Southside’s renaissance today as much as we did nearly three years ago when Warren and I announced that we were moving to the Southside from Main Street; and we firmly believe that Riverport Market will be a major catalyst in that continued revitalization,” said Derrick Clark. "We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of this exciting endeavor.”
A departure date from Third Street is yet to be finalized. However, the owners did say patrons can expect some deep discounts in a moving sale slated for this month.
