MADISON (WKOW) -- It's the first Friday of Lent and that means your favorite fish fry spots will be more crowded than usual.
During the Lenten season, many Christians abstain from eating meat on Fridays.
According to Travel Wisconsin, the Wisconsin tradition came about because there were a lot of Catholic immigrants in Wisconsin, and during the prohibition when taverns couldn’t sell alcohol, they turned to food to stay in business. Fried fish was easy, cheap and delicious — and those Catholics needed it in Lent.
