Last call came unexpectedly early for fans of the Kinsale and Stoddard’s pubs in downtown Boston, which announced Tuesday they had become the latest establishments to be felled by the coronavirus pandemic.
In a note taped to the Kinsale’s doors and windows Tuesday, owners wrote “with great sadness” that the Center Plaza Irish pub and restaurant “is not able to be a viable business during the pandemic and is now closed” as they re-evaluate its future after 22 years in business.
The Kinsale, which had reopened in September, was a popular lunch spot and place to unwind after hours for the Government Center work crowd pre-pandemic.
But co-owner Peter Sarmanian told the Herald that “because of the lack of office tenants and people in the city’s hotels, we lost a significant amount of money during the four weeks we were open.”
“As a result, we are forced to re-evaluate our future,” and the future of the Asgard, the Irish pub he also co-owns outside Cambridge’s Central Square. “We haven’t made a final decision as of yet but we hope to do so within the next week.”
Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale co-owner Frankie Stavrianopoulos also announced the closure of his popular watering hole Tuesday.
“Although it’s closing time, I am beyond confident that Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale will be remembered by many, and will be the embodiment of Old World Boston in a New World, forever,” Stavrianopoulos wrote on Facebook. “So don’t tip one over for us, but instead put a few back in our memory!”
Nearly one-fifth of Bay State restaurants have permanently closed due to the pandemic.
