For second year, UCI was most popular for freshmen applicants in UC system - OCRegister

For the second consecutive year, UC Irvine received more applications from soon-to-be freshmen in the state than any other campus in the University of California system.

The university received 72,391 applications from California high school students – 43 percent of which came from underrepresented-minority students and nearly half of which came from students who would be the first in their family to go to college.

Interest in the campus grew by more than 2,000 from last year.

“These outstanding numbers are a testament to our success on advancing our mission,” UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman said in a press release. “We exist to provide the best education possible to the people of our state, regardless of their circumstances.”

Ranked by the New York Times as one of the universities “doing the most for the American dream” and No. 1 by Forbes for best value, UCI seems to be achieving its goal of affordability. Almost two-thirds of its students receive need-based grants and nearly 12,000 receive Pell Grants, among the highest number of recipients in the country.

According to a report from the American Talent Initiative, UCI also has some of the nation’s highest retention and graduation rates among Pell Grant recipients, meaning that low-income UCI students are also more likely to complete their college education, which the university sees as key to upward social mobility.

UCI received the second highest number of total applications in the UC system, including out-of-state, international and transfer students, falling just behind UCLA. The increase – 5,000 students over last year – in interested students reflects a trend in applications to UCI, which have increased by nearly 38 percent in the last five years.

In the 2019-20 school year, 18,000 freshman and 8,000 transfer students were admitted, and university spokesman Tom Vasich said school officials expect to admit similar numbers for this fall quarter.
