Ice thicknesses range from 12-16 inches of good, clear ice. Some melt and high winds have knocked down some of the snow cover, but did create some drifting.
Another cold snap will create a nice crust on the lake and help with travel. There is still some slushing, especially in drifted areas or large concentrations of houses in community fishing spots.
Most of the more popular lakes now have some plowed roads or good trails for traveling to the first breaks off the shallow flats. If traveling off trail, check ice thicknesses and watch for pressure ridges, large cracks, or hard packed drifts.
The ice will expand and contract with the cold to warm, and back to cold weather. The expanding and contracting of the ice can open up cracks or create pressure ridges with inconsistent ice thicknesses. Pay attention, things can change daily!
There are more people ice fishing than I have ever experienced this year. It is great to see the growth of the sport. The flip side of that (and my own selfishness) is that it can at times be irritating as primo spots get gobbled up. I like to lake jump, and every lake seems to be busy.
With the mapping available now, the ability to get to private gem spots is more challenging, as there are no more secrets. I know some have dropped their permanent houses on some consistently producing locations …. good for them …. bad for us that like to jump around with our portables. It does encourage checking out new and lesser known lakes and finding new locations.
As typical for this time of year, look for the walleye bite to get even tougher in the next week or two. The bite windows will be short and related to low light conditions.
The end of January and into February is when traveling to the larger classic walleye lakes can be a way to stay on a more active bite. Mille Lacs (remember you can only keep one), Winni, Leech, and of course, Red Lake, and Lake of the Woods are your best Minnesota bets for a good walleye bite in the later winter.
Devils Lake in North Dakota has also become a popular late winter destination due to its consistency. You can count on our area to continue to have a good panfish bite, right up until it isn’t safe to be on the ice in the spring.
With the lack of derbies this year due to the ever continuing covid situation, try and make it a point to take a kid fishing. Stay safe, and make good decisions on the ice!
