A New Show Has Replaced ‘The Witcher’ As The Most Popular Series On Netflix - Forbes

The Witcher has been dethroned. Once ranked as the most-watched series on Netflix, that title has been usurped—for now.

After The Witcher’s debut in December 2019—just before all this madness took root—Netflix reported that 76 million people had watched at least some of the show.

Now, period romance drama Bridgerton can lay claim to the title. The new series, which debuted on Christmas day, 2020—just over 1 year after The Witcher—has hooked audiences with its lascivious sex scenes and steamy romance.

Netflix reported that 82 million people had tuned into Bridgerton during its first 28 days.

“A record 82 million households around the world chose to watch Bridgerton in its first 28 days,” writes Netflix VP of Original Series, Jinny Howe. “And the show has made the top 10 in every country except Japan - hitting number one in 83 countries including the US, UK, Brazil, France, India and South Africa. Indeed, the success of Bridgerton propelled the books into The New York Times best seller lists for the first time, and 18 years after they were first published.”

Howe goes on to note that all sorts of audiences love romances, but that many of these don’t get adapted for the screen. “Bridgerton has shown that romance can be smart, dynamic, bold and yes - universally appealing,” writes Howe.

Indeed, I would argue that a large part of The Witcher’s appeal is also its romance, in much the same way that Harry Potter’s success was as much about mystery as it was fantasy.

Of course, there are some caveats here. Namely, the definition of “watched” which changed around the time the streamer revealed The Witcher viewing stats. This was changed from “watched 70 percent of a single episode of a series” to anyone who “chose to watch and did watch for at least 2 minutes.”

Netflix also reports its own data, much of which it keeps private, and lacks third-party verification. This leaves a great deal to be desired—for obvious reasons. It’s in a company’s best interest to present the rosiest impression of its programming and ratings, and without third-party verification (such as Nielsen ratings for traditional TV) you can’t expect total transparency or a fully accurate accounting.

Nevertheless, this is s still a huge number for Netflix and a surprisingly strong showing for a new series. Let’s see if The Witcher’s second season—or perhaps Stranger Things 4—can top it.

Bridgerton, meanwhile, has already been renewed for a second season.
