Long before influencers started populating your Instagram feed with snapshots of San Francisco, the city’s most popular landmarks and attractions always drew large crowds.

We took a look back at photographs of some of the city’s most celebrated destinations around the same year they opened and found that many of the sites have always been just as crowded.

When the Golden Gate Bridge first opened in 1937, a fervent crowd of onlookers turned out for "Pedestrian Day" on May 27, 1937. The celebration of its opening day let guests leisurely walk or even run across the bridge before vehicles were allowed to drive on it the following day.

An article published by The San Francisco Chronicle that dates to May 28 that same year wrote that there were more than 175,000 guests who walked from either end of the bridge between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“San Francisco has seen crowds before, but never has it been called upon to meet the problem of population nearly double its own, herded into the confines of a narrow and particular area, as happened yesterday coincidental to the opening of the Golden Gate bridge [sic].”

Flashing forward to 2020, the Golden Gate Bridge continues to attract visitors from all over the world. According to a 2018 report by the National Park Service, more than 15 million visitors go to the Golden Gate Bridge each year.

The Sutro Baths are one example where crowd size was much larger back in its heyday compared to today.

When it first opened back in 1896, the Sutro Baths was a gathering place for guests looking to swim in one of its seven grand pools. The building could host 10,000 people at a single time. Popularity lasted a few years before the great structure lost its gleam and burned decades later in 1966.

What’s left are the ruins, but they still continue to draw in locals, and tourists alike, looking for a photo-op.
