Though the number of visitors dipped during the pandemic, COVID-19 didn’t stop millions of New Jerseyans from exploring state parks, forests, recreation areas, historic sites and marinas in 2020.
Total estimated attendance to the state park system was 14,949,908 people in fiscal year 2020, which ran from July 1, 2019 until June 30, 2020, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. That’s down from 17,473,287 the year before.
The DEP said one reason for the lower attendance numbers was the multi-week closure of state parks in April 2020, as the virus spread rapidly through the region. The DEP also noted an increase in park attendance during the later summer and fall of 2020 will be reflected in the fiscal year 2021 estimates.
The state calculates these figures based on the number of cars counted in each park, and the average number of people per car. Some parks are included with others for the estimates. Twin Lights Historic Site in Monmouth County, for example, is included in the attendance estimates for Cheesequake State Park.
Other parks aren’t included at all. Tall Pines State Preserve, which in 2016 became the first state park in Gloucester County, is not counted in the state’s estimates.
