Netflix Might Have Just Lost Its Most Popular Movie Ever - Forbes

When we look back on the films that have dominated Netflix in the Top 10 era, the obvious juggernauts stand out. You’ve got Spenser Confidential, which holds the record for most consecutive first place showings with 18 straight days; there are Christmas behemoths like The Grinch, The Christmas Chronicles 2, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas that dominated for months at a time; and, of course, there are animated hits like Despicable Me, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and The Angry Birds Movie 2 that continue to command the list each month.

But there’s actually one animated flick that’s quietly been one of the most—if not the most—popular movie of them all during its time on Netflix. In fact, it’s a film that just spent its final days on the streaming service.

The movie? The Secret Life of Pets 2. Which might sound crazy, because the animated sequel has never once finished in first place on the daily charts. Where movies like Despicable Me, The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Home have all had extended runs in the #1 position, The Secret Life of Pets 2 peaked in the fourth place spot. Several forgettable films have finished in the top three slots, while Secret Life has never even made it that high.

But consistency is the story of The Secret Life of Pets 2. While a case can be made for Despicable Me being Netflix’s most successful film in the Top 10 era, that movie didn’t spend as much time on the daily charts as The Secret Life of Pets 2. In fact, no other movie since the Top 10 list’s inception has spent as much time on the list.

Here are the ten movies with the most appearances on the Top 10 charts:

1. The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 138 days
2. Despicable Me - 111 days
3. The Grinch - 77 days
4. We Can Be Heroes - 68 days
5. The Mitchells vs. The Machines - 63 days
6. Angry Birds 2 - 53 days
7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas - 51 days

9. The Croods - 45 days
10. Home - 39 days

As you can see, animated and family-friendly flims perform the best on Netflix. And of all those undeniable hits, one stands above the rest: The Secret Life of Pets 2. No other movie has been as consistently popular since the Top 10 charts were introduced in late February 2020.

The caveat here, however, is that The Secret Life of Pets 2 hasn’t dominated the Top 10 like many of those other films. Last year, I started a points-based system that allowed me to track and rank each show’s performance on the Top 10 charts. And according to that list, The Secret Life of Pets 2 currently sits in fourth place.

So is The Secret Life of Pets 2 definitively the most popular Netflix movie ever? Maybe, maybe not—it depends on your perspective. But we can say for certain that no other film has been as consistently popular as the animated sequel. It may be quite some time before any movie spends that much time on the Top 10.
