The chef and co-owner of a popular Sayreville pizzeria and his wife have been charged with having more than 25 pounds of marijuana and running an edible production facility out of the home they live in with their two young children, according to authorities.
Michael Colandrea, 35, chef and co-owner of Nunzio’s Kitchen, also in Sayreville, and his wife Angela Colandrea, 34, were charged after Sayreville police executed a search warrant at their home on Friday.
Angela Colandrea, a medical marijuana advocate, runs the @HerbanLive account on Instagram.
According to the criminal complaint against the couple, they had the means and paraphernalia to manufacture and ship various types of edible marijuana, many which were in an area their two children could access. In addition to marijuana, police seized electronics, ledgers, computers and other items used to ship marijuana for profit, the complaint says.
When reached Tuesday afternoon, Michael Colandrea declined to comment on the charges, except to say they were only accusations, but added that the business is operating normally.
Angela Colandrea is a medical marijuana advocate who operates Herban Canna Co., “a safe space for the canna-curious, well-versed patients, and everyone in between," according to its website and Instagram account.
In addition to Nunzio’s, Michael offers pizza pop-up events as Doughpe Pizza. Both Doughpe Pizza and Herban advertised marijuana-infused dinner events, including one scheduled the night the search warrant was executed.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office did not say whether the pair were home at the time of the search or when they were arrested.
Both Colandreas were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, intent to distribute and two counts each of child endangerment.
Nunzio’s Kitchen is the Colandrea family’s business of 41 years, now operated by Michael and his two siblings. It has received praise from several media outlets and was included in NJ.com’s 2015 and 2016 top 25 rankings.
Michael and Angela Colandrea are due in Middlesex County Court on Nov. 2 before Judge Thomas Buck.
