Pardon the clichè but it does seem like Apple has turned a corner in India. According to a new report by Counterpoint Research, the Cupertino-based tech giant has registered 41% growth year-on-year in 2019. And if it has one iPhone to thank then its the iPhone XR. Yes, the iPhone XR is the most popular iPhone in India. In fact, Counterpoint Research suggests that for two quarters in 2019, the iPhone XR was the best-selling iPhone in the country.
One of the big reason why the iPhone XR has topped the selling charts for Apple is the price cut it received. Although Apple ‘officially’ never reduced its price till September 2019, the iPhone XR got its first price cut in April. Launched at the starting price of Rs 76,900, iPhone XR had a slow start not just in India but across the world. However, first in China, then in India, Apple reduced its price through finance options, cash backs and other schemes.
Last year, Counterpoint Research had stated that Apple had registered a 43% decline. Tarun Pathak, associate director, Counterpoint Research was quoted as saying, “Thanks to the price correction of iPhone XR, revamped channel strategy and expansion of local manufacturing in India.”
The iPhone XR was selling for Rs 53,900, which was its lowest price, that was till the iPhone 11 came around in September 2019. Once the iPhone 11 was launched, the iPhone XR’s price was officially reduced to Rs 49,900. At this point, the iPhone XR was selling less than OnePlus’ most expensive smartphone and was similarly priced to Samsung’s affordable flagship, the Galaxy S10e.
During the festive and other sales on e-commerce platforms, the iPhone XR was available for as low as Rs 44,900 and prospective buyers could’ve got it for less with exchange offers and other schemes.
