Michigan has a thriving craft beer industry.
From established industry leaders to small microbreweries, there’s little doubt that Michigan is one of the top states in America for craft beer. It’s big business, too.
Nationally, the craft beer industry brought in more than $27.6 billion in 2018 alone, according to the Brewers Association
But what are the most popular breweries in Michigan?

Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. Even taking a fact-based approach can be tricky since beer volume doesn’t necessarily translate to most popular.
To try and find out what Michigan’s most popular breweries are in 2020, the home and lifestyle blog House Method analyzed every craft brewery in the U.S. on four, social media-based factors including number of Facebook followers, number of Instagram followers, number of Yelp reviews, and the average Yelp rating.
Data for those factors were then compared against the other breweries using a weighted scale with a total potential score of 50.
The results?
When it comes to Michigan, the largest brewer is also the most popular, with Comstock-based Bell’s Brewery taking the top spot.
The rest of the top 5 most popular Michigan breweries include New Holland Brewing (Holland), Short’s Brewing Company (Bellaire), The Mitten Brewing Company (Grand Rapids) and Dark Horse Brewing Company (Marshall).
Noticeably absent is Michigan’s other craft beer giant, Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids. It’s not clear why.
Founders Brewing Company was second in total beer sold in Michigan in 2018 with 115,178 barrels sold, according to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. That was up 20% compared to 2017.

Atwater Brewing in Detroit and Perrin Brewing in Grand Rapids were also in the top 5 in total barrels sold in Michigan, but not popularity, according to the House Method study.
Bell’s Brewery is the 17th most popular brewery in the United States, according to the study. New Holland (62) and Short’s (105) were also in the Top 150 nationally.
New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado is America’s most popular brewery according to the study.
Boston Beer Company, Goose Island Brewery, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery rounded out the top 5 nationally.
