STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- It was an interesting year for car sales, to say the least.
With the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic scaring many Americans away from public transit, the market for new and used cars was inundated with millions of new buyers looking to take back control of their daily commute.
With that in mind, automotive research firm iSeeCars recently released a new study of the best-selling new and used vehicles in 2020, analyzing nearly 13 million vehicle sales records to see which cars, trucks and SUVs were among the most popular in the past year.
NEW CARS
The list of best-selling new vehicles nationwide was dominated by pickup trucks and SUVs, which accounted for eight of the top 10 spots.
The Ford F-150 ranked first, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ram Pickup 1500, in order.
“The Ford F-150 continues its 40-year reign as the best-selling new vehicle in the United States, due to its utility and its wide range of customizable options for a variety of consumers,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “Pickup trucks continued to surge in popularity in recent months, resulting in inventory shortages in the wake of the pandemic.”
Rounding out the top-10 most popular new cars were the Hyundai Tucson, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota Tacoma, in order.
“The Honda Civic and the Toyota Camry have been among the best-selling cars in America for decades,” said Brauer. “These passenger cars have excellent long-term reliability, which is why they remain popular even as the popularity of the sedan segment declines.”
USED CARS
The list of best-selling used cars in the United States was a bit more balanced, with four sedans, three pickup trucks and three SUVs, though pickup trucks again found themselves at the top.
Just as it had in new car sales, the Ford F-150 led the way in used sales, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram Pickup 1500, Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue, in order.
“Used pickup truck sales remained strong and even grew in sales during the pandemic, while all other segments declined, as consumers needed them for work,” said Brauer.
The Honda Civic landed sixth on the list of most popular used cars, followed by the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Altima and Nissan Sentra, in order.
“These sedans are popular among first-time car buyers who are looking for affordable vehicles, and with commuters, thanks to their strong MPG ratings,” said Brauer.
NEW YORK CITY
The study also provided a look at the top five best-selling new and used vehicles by city, indicating that New York City residents may not have the same affinity for pickup trucks seen throughout much of the country.
In New York City, the Jeep Grand Cherokee topped the list of most popular new cars, followed by the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic.
For used cars, the Honda Accord topped the list, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Civic, Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4.
