The 25 Most Popular Shows On Netflix In 2021 - Update: April 3 - Forbes

At this point, it’s been a full week since this big piece of Netflix news: Ginny & Georgia passed Tiger King’s streak of 27 consecutive days in first place on the Top 10 charts. Since then, two different shows have claimed the #1 position on the daily list—and both of those shows have already made it onto the 2021 rankings.

What are the 2021 rankings, you ask? Well, I record where shows rank on Netflix’s Top 10 charts each day. Then based on where those programs rank, I assign points accordingly and track each show’s score over a longer period of time. Because Netflix doesn’t release viewership data on its content, this is the closest we get to day-by-day reflections of which shows are dominating the Netflix platform.

Which brings us to the 2021 charts. As of April 3, these have been the 25 most popular shows on Netflix this year (the bolded selections are newcomers to this list):

  1. CoComelon - 470 points
  2. Bridgerton - 438 points

At first glance, the yearly charts are nearly identical to last week’s list—albeit one major difference. Last week, Ginny & Georgia sat in fourth place with 297 points. But after yet another solid week, the mother-daughter drama moved past the eternally popular iCarly to claim the third-place position. Which means that what once seemed improbable is now a reality: Bridgerton is now within reach for Ginny & Georgia.

Although it’s hard to believe that Ginny & Georgia—or any show, for that matter—will catch the unstoppable CoComelon. Today, the children’s program saw its 67th consecutive day on the Top 10 charts. That’s the third-longest streak ever, behind The Queen’s Gambit’s 78-day streak and—wouldn’t you know it!—CoComelon’s 148-day streak that took place between August 2020 and January 2021. The show’s 1,213 points are nearly more than double the total for the second-place show, The Queen’s Gambit, on the all-time rankings.

There were three new additions to the yearly charts this week. One of those programs, Country Comfort, had an impressive ten-day run on the daily Top 10, reaching as high as the second-place position back on March 22 and 23. The show, however, has since fallen from the daily charts (and will likely lose its place on the yearly rankings very soon).

The other two new additions were programs that premiered this week. The Irregulars has only been available for seven days, but thanks to an impressive showing (which included five days in the #2 position on the daily charts and one day in the #1 spot) it has already catapulted onto the 2021 rankings.

The most notable of the newcomers has been Who Killed Sara?, which was the first show to dethrone Ginny & Georgia from the top spot after Ginny & Georgia’s legendary run. The crime drama has now spent seven of its first eight days in that #1 position.

Because there were three newcomers this week, there were three casualties as well: Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan (which currently has 57 points), History of Swear Words (51 points) and Gabby’s Dollhouse (51 points as well).

These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which shows have moved up and down the list.
