By The Numbers: Most & Least Popular Dog Breeds Over the Years - American Kennel Club

In 1991, the Labrador Retriever began its uninterrupted reign as the most popular breed in the U.S., ending the Cocker Spaniel’s 23 years in the top position. As the No. 1 breed of the 1940s, the Cocker Spaniel, enjoyed a renaissance in the ’80s, climbing back into the top spot from 1983–1990. That feat meant that it held the No. 1 position historically—23 times—more than any other breed.

For most Americans, it comes as no surprise to know the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed. But have you ever wondered about the least popular dog breed? What about the dog breeds on the up and up? Or the breeds losing popularity?

We break down the 2019 registration data and look at the past year and decade. Whether it’s the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breaking into the top 10 for the first time or the English Foxhound sitting at the very bottom of the popularity scale, get to know the most and least popular dog breeds.
