While trying to maintain social distancing while getting outside many Americans have turned towards riding a bicycle. Data shows that the activity has grown nationwide during the pandemic.
Wisconsin based Trek Bicycle Corporation surveyed over 1,000 American adults that owned bicycles between April 6-8, 2020 and the pandemic hasn't stopped many from riding.
According to the survey, 21 percent of Americans that own a bike said they have been riding more during the pandemic.
"Our data shows the 50 percent of Americans are going to ride their bikes more after this pandemic," said Eric Bjorling, the Director of Brand at Trek. "I think bikes are an incredibly important tool now. Bike shops have been deemed essential businesses I think they will be just as important if not more after this as well."
The month of May is always a busy one for bike shops in Madison. Budget Bicycle Center on Regent Street has orders around the clock. Due to the pandemic they aren't allowing customers into their stores at the moment. Instead, they take the orders for the bicycle at the door.
"Things were changing a lot, now we're settled in a regular routine," said Roger Charly, owner of Budget Bicycle Center. "We are all wearing our masks and so fourth."
Data from Trek's survey also states that 85 percent of Americans perceieve cycling as a safer mode of transportation compared to public transportation during the pandemic. 14 percent of Americans bike ride to replace public transportation.
"The fact that I don't have to ride in a big group, I don't have to ride around all of these big people," said Bjorling about why bicycle owners might feel this way. "I can wait, or I can go over here or find another route. I think there's definitely that."
