New Zealand's most popular baby names for 2019 - Stuff.co.nz

Oliver remains the most popular baby name for boys in New Zealand, but Charlotte has lost the top spot to Amelia.

Amelia was among the top 10 most popular names since 2011, but Charlotte topped the lists in 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2018. Oliver has been the top pick for boys for the last seven years. 

Nikau and Mia were found to be the most popular Māori names. Taika and Rawiri for boys and Tui and Ataahua for girls were new additions to the list.

Gemma and Richie McCaw shared a photo of daughter Charlotte on social media to mark her first birthday in December 2019.

Jeff Montgomery, Registrar-General Births, Deaths and Marriages, said it was exciting to see Māori names gain popularity around the world.

The most popular baby names of 2019 have been released.

The popular names list was released by the Department of Internal Affairs on Monday.

Last week the Department of Internal Affairs released a list of the top baby names over the past 120 years. John, David and William took out the top three spots for the boys. Margaret, Mary and Elizabeth were the most popular for girls.
