Before 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was preparing to match wits against Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, Shanahan worked under Pettine.
In 2014, Pettine was the Browns head coach, Shanahan was his offensive coordinator and, in a video clip that’s been very popular on social media this week, Shanahan wasn’t amused when Pettine suggested an offensive play call.
The video is from Cleveland’s 23-13 win over the Raiders on Oct. 26, 2014. The Browns were leading 9-6 early in the fourth quarter and faced second-and-goal from the four-yard line.
Pettine’s pre-snap message to Shanahan: “I say we run it.”
Shanahan’s wordless response? He shot Pettine a very displeased you’ve-got-to-kidding-me-right-now look.
Pettine’s response: “You know what, I trust you. Call your best play.”
With a Kyle Shanahan v Mike Pettine battle on Sunday, what a great clip. This one has it all:

On Friday, when asked about the video, Shanahan it was an accurate reflection of his working relationship with Pettine in their lone season together. And he meant it in a positive way.
“I think that shows how cool a guy Mike was. And is,” Shanahan said. “A head coach is always going to pop in here or there and tell a coordinator to do something. I promise you, I know what my role is. And I’ll always do what they tell you to do. It happens with (49ers defensive coordinator Robert) Saleh a lot, too. I’m not involved with the defense a lot and I get in and see a couple things and I want to do something. I really hope that if I tell Saleh something, if he strongly disagrees, I really hope that he tells me that back.
“And then I have the decision to say ‘I don’t care what you’re saying, do it anyways.’ Or I listen. And that’s how Mike and I were. Mike could see probably by my facial expression I thought we should pass. And he trusted me. If he hadn’t cared, he would said ‘No’ and I would have called a run. I think it’s very important for a play-caller, whether you’re on offense or defense, to have that relationship.”
The rest of the story from that 2014 game: Shanahan called a roll-out pass, and Brian Hoyer found wide-open wide receiver Andrew Hawkins for a four-yard score.
On the sideline, Pettine asked backup quarterback Johnny Manziel what play he would have called.
Said Manziel: “Draw play.”
And the rest of the story from the 2014 season: Shanahan resigned following the 7-9 campaign after he presented Pettine with 32 reasons why he wanted to leave, with meddling from the front office high on his list.
“I had some specific reasons I didn't think it was going in the right direction —why it wasn't the best place for me and my family,” Shanahan said in 2017. “Pet was real cool about it. He understood.”
For his part, Pettine addressed Shanahan’s exit in 2015.
“The bottom line is essentially that Kyle didn’t want to be a part of the organization anymore,” Pettine said. “You can use the word ‘quit.’ ... If a guy truly doesn’t want to be a part of the organization, then I wasn’t going to sit and waste a lot of time on it. I didn’t need to go through 32 points or whatever it was.”
