NORWALK — Despite the snow and stinging wind, people found warmth and solace in a frozen tradition this weekend.
Mr. Frosty’s Ice Cream Shop — the landmark dessert spot at 6 First St. in East Norwalk, which originally began in the early 1960s — started its season a month early with its opening on Friday.
“Traditionally we open March 1, but we had a lot of demand this year because of the pandemic,” explained owner Anthony Luciani, a Norwalk native who, along with his wife and co-owner Rosa Luciani, grew up frequenting the shop.
While the virus and related shutdowns had some initial impact for them, he said it ultimately helped them re-imagine their business with curbside and delivery. Consequently, Luciani said, it grew even more successful through the Christmas holiday when it shut for the winter season.
“We’ve just been getting emails and calls saying, ‘Please come back early this year,’” he said, noting that people feel more comfortable being outside and are looking for different things to do with their time.
“Yesterday was probably the best opening day we’ve ever had,” he noted on Saturday afternoon, when they were also seeing a steady flow of customers despite the cold and wind.
“The sun’s out and we wanted to get outside,” said Charlotte Cavanaugh, of Darien. “We needed to get out of the house.”
“There’s no bad time for ice cream,” said Victoria McCaffrey, of Norwalk, who has been visiting the shop since she was little. “If they were open all year-round I’d be here every day.”
“I think coronavirus has changed a lot of things,” Rosa Luciani said. “What we’ve heard from a lot of our customers is that it’s corona winter.”
She said the location has always been a big go-to for the community, as well as a familial partner to its people.
“I think it’s just making people feel super homey again,” she said, to be able to come back to their familiar favorite ice cream shop and enjoy the warmth of a cold treat.
