CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Man’s best friend has been domesticated for centuries, with about 450 breeds found around the globe.
And they are popular close to home.
Nearly 63,300 dogs were licensed this year by the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter -- about one for every 10 households.
Fees charged on 1-year, 3-year and permanent dog licenses generated more than $1.6 million.
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer analyzed those dog licenses, and found they are broken down into nearly 250 categories – breeds, mixes of breeds and general groups, such as hounds or terriers.
But which breeds are the most popular? The Labrador retriever, listed by the American Kennel Club as the most popular breed in the country, tops Cuyahoga County’s list.
Here are the top 10 breeds, listed by the number of dog licenses.
1. Labrador Retriever 1,363
2. German Shepherd 963
3. Golden Retriever 859
4. Pit Bull Terrier 565
5. Shih Tzu 542
6. Short Coat Chihuahua 516
7. Miniature Schnauzer 491
8. Boxer 472
9. Beagle 455
10. Siberian Husky 448
There are far more dogs that are mixed breeds than there are pure-bred pooches. More than 48,000 of the dogs in the license database are a mix of breeds.
