Popular Ice Castles attraction returns to New Brighton this winter - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

Ramsey County is bringing back a popular winter ice castle attraction this year after builders took a year off because of the pandemic.

In January, Utah-based Ice Castles will return to Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton, offering up a fairy-tale frozen experience with tunnels, caverns, towers, fountains, slides and crawl spaces built with ice that is “grown on site, harvested, and hand-placed by professional ice artisans,” Ramsey County parks and recreation officials said Tuesday.

The winter playground will also include an ice sculpture garden and a winter light grove this season, county officials said.

In the past, the company has installed the all-ice attractions in Stillwater, Excelsior, Eden Prairie and at the Mall of America, before choosing Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton for 2020. The installations have been popular, bringing about 100,000 visitors to Stillwater in 2017 alone.

“We are excited to bring the magic of Ice Castles back to the Twin Cities this winter with an expanded experience,” Ice Castles CEO Kyle Standifird said in a statement. “Our mission is to create a fun and safe outdoor attraction where people can escape from the hustle of daily life for a moment and step into a frozen fairy-tale world.”

Construction on the winter attraction begins as early as November, with a team of at least 20 ice artisans spending about eight weeks building the experience. Ice Castles typically opens in early January, depending on the weather and remains open until early March.

Presale tickets to visit the frozen fortresses will be available in December on the company’s website, icecastles.com. New Brighton is one of five Ice Castles locations in the United States, with others planned for Wisconsin, New Hampshire, New York and Utah, according to the company’s website.

“We are thrilled to be hosting Ice Castles at Long Lake Regional Park,” said Mark McCabe, director of Ramsey County Parks and Recreation, “and are hoping for a good old-fashioned cold and snowy Minnesota winter so everyone can enjoy the full beauty Ice Castles will bring to the park.”
