Some residents in Queens are not too happy about what’s going on at one local restaurant. They have a host of complaints, from rowdy late-night crowds to its unsafe building structure.
“They pee and they vomit,” said a single mother named Lola, who from her daughters’ bedroom in their Auburndale apartment has a great view of lots of things she would rather not see.
“They leave the garbage behind. They’ll leave bottles of alcohol everywhere," she said.
And judging by a rally Saturday, held outside Kloud Tequila – Grill on Northern Boulevard, she’s not alone. Nearly 100 residents, business owners, and politicians attended.
“What do we want? Sanity!” the crowd chanted.
Lola is one of many who feels at Kloud Tequila - Grill needs to be a better neighbor or get out.
“Not only trash,” said property owner Alexandra Han, who attended the rally. “Customers come out at 3 or 4 am. They drag race. They leave tire marks. Most of the residents can’t go to sleep at night."
During its last inspection, back in 2019, Kloud Tequila – Grill was issued 11 violations from the New York State Liquor Authority.
And after eight months of mounting complaints and sleepless nights, there is a growing push by neighbors and politicians to get the SLA to revoke the liquor license of this hookah lounge, bar, and grill.
Operating manager Sal Khan said over the past two months, he’s taken steps to make sure the street outside is clean, once his customers leave, and he hopes to engage in open dialogue with the community to resolve their differences.
“I’m going to do my best,” Khan says. “We’re not here to create any problems for any neighbors as a business or for people living in the neighborhood.”
“So you’re going to listen to their complaints?” NY1 asked Khan. “Of course,” he replied.
Because of the loud noises coming from outside the lounge, Lola says she only gets about three hours of sleep each night, and has even warned her kids they may need to move for the first time in 16 years, if the situation isn’t resolved soon.
“I hope and I’m praying,” Lola says. “Otherwise, I have to pack and go. I’m not going to be able to go on like this. I’m tire. I’m exhausted.”
Looking ahead, the SLA is expected to announce a hearing date soon, where residents are allowed to offer public comment on whether the liquor license for Kloud Tequila - Grill should be revoked.
