Popular 'Women's Work' show returns to Jeannette art gallery - TribLIVE

Last year’s “Women’s Work” exhibition at You Are Here gallery proved so popular organizers decided to do it again.

“We did the show without any preconceived ideas, and we didn’t expect such a positive response,” said gallery co-founder Jen Costello. “It really exceeded our expectations.”

This year’s show, with works in various media by 40 women artists, opens with drop-in reception hours from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 406 Clay Ave., Jeannette. It will run through May 22.

“I love that magic that happens when our artworks and voices are displayed alongside one another,” said exhibiting artist Stacey Pydynkowski of Latrobe. “The pieces are powerful alone, but when they’re together in a gallery space, conversations, connections and community forms — united by the common thread of womanhood.”

The common thread that led to the exhibitions started with You Are Here’s monthly Women in Art discussion group.

Group meetings cover topics of particular concerns to an inclusive women artist community that might not be discussed within the wider arts community, said facilitator Jen Palmer.

“Our topics depend on the group’s needs,” she said.

In addition to conversation, meetings also feature panel discussions, speakers and critiques of members’ work. In-person meetings gave way during the pandemic to Zoom sessions.

“We just had so many amazing women making such amazing work,” Palmer said. “There was a lot of conversation on what it means to be a woman artist in this area. I think somebody just said, ‘Let’s do a show,’ and everyone said, ‘OK.’”

“Showcasing women artists and their works opens up an avenue of endless possibles. I have benefited greatly from it,” said exhibiting artist Pamela Cooper of Greensburg. “I ventured out to create and teach art on my own and to share the knowledge that I have gained from my experiences.”

Works were juried by Felecia Brice McFail, an artist, arts activist and owner of FOHTA (From One Hand to Another), a calligraphy gallery in Arlington, Virginia.

Exhibiting artists come not only from Westmoreland and Allegheny counties, but from places farther afield, including State College, Carlisle and the state of California, said gallery co-founder Mary Briggs.

Her three-round selection process was simple, McFail said: “I just picked the pieces I really, really liked, and I picked a variety so the show wouldn’t be based on just one type of art.

“I like all types of art, but I wanted to feel something about each piece I picked,” she said. “I picked a large range of works from beginners, intermediate and advanced artists. I specifically tried to pick some pieces that I thought came from beginners, so that they would feel included and encouraged.”

The exhibition also contains pieces created by members of the discussion group and the gallery team, along with oil and acrylic paintings and photographs by the late Greensburg artist, Gloria Gonzalez. Sales of Gonzalez’ work will benefit her family.

Properly worn masks are required for the exhibition opening and for visits at other times. The number of visitors in the gallery at any given time will be monitored and limited by staff members.

Regular gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. Sundays.
