2020 was a rough year for everyone, including dealerships and automakers that had a lot of trouble selling new vehicles. Still, amid the pandemic, which saw, and continues to see, millions of Americans lose their jobs, pickup trucks continued to be the most popular new cars. Strange, as pickup trucks are some of the most expensive vehicles on the market. One would assume that the uncertainty of the pandemic would see consumers attempt to purchase small, affordable vehicles. But according to a report from iSeeCars, that wasn’t the case.
The most popular vehicle in 2020 in the U.S. according to the outlet was the Ford F-150. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 came in second place, while the Toyota RAV4 sits in third place. The Honda CR-V and Ram 1500 round out the top five. With the F-150 sitting at the top of the charts, the pickup continues to wear its crown as the king of sales for 40 years. With Ford introducing an all-new generation of the F-150 for the 2021 model year, this year marked the last time consumers would be able to purchase an older model new off dealer lots before the new generation takes over. Pickup trucks, like the F-150 were so popular, that many dealerships faced shortages.
The 2020 Silverado 1500 received a host of changes, including a new optional diesel engine, an increased maximum towing capacity of 13,400 pounds, increased availability of the optional 6.2-liter V8 engine, and a new 10-speed automatic transmission for the 5.3-liter V8. These changes certainly made the 2020 Silverado 1500 more desirable, helping it clinch the second spot behind the F-150. The Toyota Tacoma is the only midsize pickup on the list coming in at tenth overall.
There are a total of four compact SUVs in the top 10 most popular new cars of 2020. The RAV4 (third), CR-V (fourth), Hyundai Tucson (sixth), and Chevrolet Equinox (ninth) all did well. Seeing these vehicles on the list isn’t surprising. Compact SUVs are incredibly popular because of their versatile body style and relatively affordable pricing. Additionally, the RAV4, CR-V, and Tucson stand out for being reliable.
While sedans are far less popular than they once were, a few options still did very well. The Honda Civic (seventh) and Toyota Camry (eighth) were the only two sedans to make the top 10. The two sedans have continually been popular options in the U.S. for multiple years, so it’s not surprising to see them make the list.
Overall, none of the vehicles on the top 10 list are exactly surprising. Maybe the Equinox, since it doesn’t really lead the segment in any particular category and hasn’t been fully updated since 2018. But the list is made up of a good mix of American, Japanese, and South Korean brands. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the most popular new cars in 2020 were also incredibly popular on the used market. The F-150, Silverado 1500, Civic, Camry, and Equinox were also popular used vehicles last year.
