As per the report, this probable move by Google has something to do with the company placing its consumer communication services in the hands of G Suite head Javier Soltero. The senior Google hand reportedly relayed to the employees that two apps for video calling need weren’t really required.
To compete with Zoom, Google launched the Meet video calling app that was free to use just like Duo. Meet also came integrated in the Gmail platform. The company may be thinking along the lines of keeping just one video calling app for both regular and enterprise needs. As per the report, the two apps may be merged as "Duet" (Duo+Meet).
Duo has been an important video app for Google before Meet came. While Google Allo couldn't be a success, Duo was because of the video calling feature. Some of the features to have been added to Duo have been group call support, web client and audio and video messages. The app is preinstalled and comes integrated with Google Messages and Phone dialer. Starting a video call with a contact is easy.
The report, citing sources says that the Meet app will be revamped with some of the features of Google Duo like end-to-end encryption, phone contacting users for video, 3D effects etc.
Perhaps the reason behind this supposed axing of the Duo app is the reported popularity of Google Meet that has gone past that of Duo. Peak daily use of Meet jumped by 30 times in late April, says the report citing Google, while Duo use for the same time saw a spike of just 8 times.
