Two popular outdoor group fitness programs start virtually – for now - Buffalo News

Organizers of the two most popular annual outdoor group fitness programs in the region started their 2020 endeavors virtually.

They hope Fitness in the Parks and Fitness at Canalside won’t stay that way.

Everyone is operating with an abundance of caution and the parks aren't even able yet to give us the permits to run the classes, so we went this route instead,” said Kathy Glieco, vice president of marketing with Independent Health, which hosts Fitness in the Parks with YMCA Buffalo Niagara. “But we'd love to get back in the parks if we could.”

It will depend how well citizens and visitors in the region stick to Covid-19 prevention measures, during what typically would be a carefree season, and continue to drive down the number of related hospitalizations and deaths.

Meanwhile, Fitness at Canalside will feature some of the top studio trainers in Western New York leading nine weekly and three special classes, including yoga, Zumba, high-intensity interval training, kickboxing, Kids Get Moving and La’Movement dance fitness. See the schedule at bcbswny.com/play.

Fitness centers and studios ready for their call back to action

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York sponsors the free classes, which traditionally take place on the downtown waterfront into Labor Day weekend. A spokeswoman said they will do so later this summer if the health insurer, with recommendations from public health officials, deem it safe.

Fitness in the Parks leaders hope their free program can gather its enthusiasts in more than 20 parks across the region before it comes to a close Sept. 12.

So far, Pam Vetrano has led live-stream Thursday evening yoga classes and Saturday morning cardio kickboxing classes –outside on her back porch. Fellow instructors have chosen other backdrops from outside YMCA branches.

“I just have my computer in my backyard on a chair, and with cardio kickboxing there's music, so I've got my Bluetooth speaker, and so far so good,” said Vetrano, senior program director of the Wellness Center at the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA.

Other classes include boot camp on Monday evenings, kickboxing late Tuesday afternoons and fusion workouts on Wednesday mornings.

All classes stream on the YMCA Buffalo Niagara or the Jamestown Area YMCA Facebook pages and can be replayed anytime.

Vetrano misses the interaction of in-person outdoor classes because she cannot see or hear her students during Facebook Live classes so she can’t pick up on visual or verbal cues.

“The good news is we have a consistent virtual schedule, just like we would with the parks,” Vetrano said, “but you can access it from anywhere at any time. If you missed it, you can watch it later – and it never gets rained out.”
