Motorist destroys field at popular Oroville park - Chico Enterprise-Record

OROVILLE — A motorist completely destroyed the multi-use field at Oroville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Park, sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Deep tire marks gouged the majority of the field and tore the grass down to bare dirt. The driver weaved and circled, tossing mud over the little green surface left and creating dozens of tears in the field. It was clear the act was done by someone intent on causing damage.

When Gail Munro entered the park with her dog Monday morning, she was nearly brought to tears. Munro visits the park frequently.

“I think this destruction is a terrible disrespect to our community and to Martin Luther King Jr.,” Munro said. “It’s going to cost a fortune to put this beautiful park back together just because of some disrespectful people.”

Munro was right about the cost.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Park is managed by the Feather River Recreation and Park District. The district’s general manager, Shawn Rohrbacker, said the repairs will be costly on their own, but the total will be even higher combined with the costs of new gates, bollards and security cameras.

“They’ll be blocking off the parking lots so you can’t access them after dusk,” Rohrbacker said. “There’s one part of the park where you can drive past the fence where we’ll put the bollard in. We’ll probably put in four cameras.”

During the repair process, the field will be unusable until after summer.

“That whole big multi-use field, which is a big part of that neighborhood and it’s going to be closed all summer while that grass grows back,” Rohrbacker said.

The price tag on repairs and additional security could be as high as $75,000, said the Feather River Recreation and Park District — nearly the cost of an employee’s salary.

“The most unfortunate thing after the scale of the damage this weekend is repairing those fields will take about six months, so we’re looking at about $50-60,000 in renting grading equipment, 50-plus yards of topsoil and 500 pounds of seed,” Rohrback said.

Rohrbacker said the funding will likely come from the maintenance budget, meaning less money for upkeep on the local parks.

“For the five-minute joyride, it’s going to cost the community $60-75,000 and a big part of their park for the spring and summer season,” Rohrbacker said.

The same park was hit with similar vandalism just weeks prior to this incident. The crews were in the process of patching it up when it happened again.
