These Have Been The Most Popular Movies On Netflix (So Far) This Winter - Forbes

We’re only 45 days into the new year, and there have already been 15 different movies that have captured the #1 position on Netflix’s Top 10 charts. Usually, a single film will remain dominant for days at a time. But 2021 is a fresh year, and the new trend on the world’s most popular streaming platform is lots and lots of variety.

Which is great! But it also makes you wonder: which movies have actually been the most dominant in 2021?

Unfortunately, we don’t have a definitive answer to that question because Netflix keeps such a tight wrap on its viewership numbers. But we do have a pretty good idea thanks to my Top 10 formula, which assigns points each day based on where a movie places on the daily charts.

So which movie has been the most popular this winter season? For that date range—which stretches from Dec. 21, 2020 to March 20, 2021—there is one film that’s a clear winner. But after that, the rest of the field is wide open.

Here are the 20 most popular movies of the winter season (so far) according to my Top 10 ranking system:

  1. We Can Be Heroes - 341 points
  2. The Vanished - 124 points
  3. Homefront - 115 points
  4. 17 Again - 109 points
  5. Outside the Wire - 109 points
  6. Finding ‘Ohana - 107 points
  7. The Midnight Sky - 98 points
  8. Good Burger - 91 points
  9. Unknown - 90 points
  10. The Next Three Days - 88 points
  11. Penguins of Madagascar - 83 points
  12. The Dig - 83 points
  13. All About the Benjamins - 77 points
  14. Death to 2020 - 76 points
  15. After We Collided - 75 points
  16. Below Zero - 66 points
  17. How the Grinch Stole Christmas - 66 points
  18. Are We There Yet? - 58 points
  19. Cut Throat City - 58 points
  20. Pieces of a Woman - 58 points

It’s certainly no surprise to see We Can Be Heroes in first place, as that film has arguably become Netflix’s most popular movie of the Top 10 era. The film has now been on the daily charts for 51 consecutive days—a feat only two other movies (The Grinch and How the Grinch Stole Christmas) can match. During that time, We Can Be Heroes has seen a #1 finish on ten different days.

In addition to nabbing first place on the winter list, We Can Be Heroes is currently the third-most popular movie of Netflix’s Top 10 era. And very soon, it could surpass Despicable Me to claim the #1 spot.

After We Can Be Heroes, the field becomes pretty crowded. Because no movie has been nearly as dominant as that superhero flick, nobody has been able to run away with the second-place position.

It is pretty surprising to see The Vanished in that #2 spot, however, considering the movie never claimed the #1 spot on the daily list. Several other movies that rank behind The Vanished have managed to spent multiple days in the top spot—such as Homefront, which spent four consecutive days in first place, and Outside the Wire, which captured six days at the top.

So while no movie will manage to catch up with We Can Be Heroes, it still remains to be seen what film will rise to that second-place position. I will continue to track the rankings each day and update this article accordingly.
