Popular Pearland race offers virtual and in-person options - Houston Chronicle

A popular Pearland road race is going to offer runners the choice on which way they’d prefer to participate.

The Pearland half marathon and 10k will be held March 21. This is the third running of the event. In its first year, there were about 1,500 competitors. The 2020 version was hit hard by the pandemic, however.

“Last year we had to convert to a virtual event because of the pandemic,” said Lauren Smith, who co-directs race with Randi Schooley. “It came across pretty furiously about two weeks before race day; so we canceled the (live) event and turned it virtual. We had about 700 people participate virtually.”

Smith and Schooley also own the race management company iRun Productions.

This year, the team decided to offer two ways runners can participate. Those who want to get out and compete in-person can do so, but those who are leery of crowds can participate virtually.

Participants can register online. The entry fee for the in-person half-marathon is $70, while the virtual version costs $50. Registering in the live 10k carries a $50 fee and the virtual edition is $40.

Smith said they partnered with the city of Pearland and the Brazoria County Health Department to make the live race as safe as possible.

“We have very strict COVID precautions in place; so we’re capping the event at 800 (in-person) participants,” she said. “That way we can keep our participants safe and maintain social distancing.”

There is no limit on the number of participants who wish to compete virtually.

It appears that people are itching to get back on track.

“Given the way registrations have been going, we fully anticipate hitting our cap of 800,” Smith said.

Those familiar with road races will see a different kind of start. When they register, runners will select what pace they expect to run. Then they will be assigned a start time.

“We’re spacing out participants at the start chute and allowing five-minute gaps between pace groups so we can make sure people are fully spread out across the course,” Smith said.

Masked at start and finish

Another difference will be that all runners are required to wear race-provided face masks at the start and the finish. A trash can will be located at the half-mile mark where the masks can be disposed. Volunteers will provide another mask near the end of the race.

Both the half-marathon and the 10k start and end at Independence Park, 3449 Pearland Parkway. Runners will start with a loop around the park, then head down Magnolia Parkway.

The 10k racers will turn around at McLean Road then head back to the park. Half-marathoners, however, will continue the trek along Magnolia until they hit their turnaround at Route 90.

Raceday will get off to an early start. Handcyclists competing in the half marathon will get rolling at 6:55 a.m., while runners get started at 7:30 a.m.

Participants will have four hours to complete the half-marathon.

Competitors who go the virtual route can submit their times March 14-21.
