Dallas Cowboys a popular pick to return to playoffs next season in ESPN survey - The Dallas Morning News

For the Dallas Cowboys, the 2020 season was one to forget.

Four different staring quarterbacks, injuries across the offensive line, and subpar performances from the defense under new head coach Mike McCarthy led the Cowboys to a 6-10 record and another year without a playoff appearance.

Despite the disappointment, Dallas was in the playoff hunt until the end of the season due to the lackluster performance of every team in the NFC East last season, and that is a reason why some are high on the Cowboys’ chances of returning to the postseason in 2021.

In a recent ESPN survey, four of eight writers selected the Cowboys as the most likely team that missed the playoffs in 2020 to return to the dance in 2021.

“The division is wide open and I’m convinced [Dak] Prescott will finally be signed long-term this offseason,” said ESPN NFL analyst Field Yates. “His value was highlighted by his absence this past season and I expect an exceptional comeback.”

NFL writer Jeremy Fowler, The Undefeated’s Jason Reid, and analytics writer Seth Walder also picked the Cowboys.

“They would have obliterated the woeful NFC East with a healthy Prescott, who will be back if there’s any sanity in that front office,” Walder said. “Don’t get me wrong: That defense has problems. But defense can also be fixed much quicker than offense.”

In addition to picking playoff teams, the survey also asked which rookie from the 2020 draft class is in line for the biggest jump in their sophomore NFL season, and ESPN fantasy writer Mike Clay chose Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

“Lamb looked the part as a rookie, posting a 74-935-5 receiving line while adding 82 yards and one touchdown with his legs and another score as a returner,” Clay said.

“Of course, he enjoyed most of his success with a healthy Dak Prescott during Weeks 1-2, ranking sixth in the NFL in receiving yards during the span, before plummeting to 43rd from that point forward. The 17th overall pick has a good chance to jump to the elite tier of wide receivers with Prescott likely back under center in 2021.”
