Brunch It: Millennials put a new spin on the popular Sunday event - Greeley Tribune

Growing up in Palm Springs, California, brunch was a popular Sunday event that typically only members of the country clubs partook in or was reserved for Mother’s Day.

The breakfast/lunch affair was a buffet filled with a bevy of eggs dishes, sausage, bacon, freshly sliced roast beef, rows of vibrantly colored fruit arranged on trays adorned with radish flowers, a salad bar and pastry section.

You didn’t dare roll into brunch wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops either. No, brunch was where you dressed in your best clothes, curled your hair and added an extra swipe of mascara onto your lashes.

Over the past few years, the millennial generation has put a new spin on the popular Sunday event, making it more mainstream and not just set for one particular day during the week.

“My daughters who are millennials say ‘brunch is life,’” laughed Christy Moriarty, co-owner of the Epic Egg.  “It’s insane to me because I think the younger generation has this discretionary and/or disposable income that they can spend to go out to eat. They don’t stop at anything. They order what they want and they love it.”

With many younger adults working weekends and nights, they don’t get up as early or have the opportunity to attend brunch events on Sundays, so they’ve turned the social affair into a weekday ritual.

“It’s really a time to hang out with friends and just relax,” Tiffany Schmidt, 22, a student at Aims Community College said. “I don’t spend money on anything but rent, school and living costs. This is my once-a-week treat.

“And it’s a good excuse to day drink,” she added laughing.

Brunch hours are between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Moriarty said. Which allows people to catch a few hours of extra sleep while still having the opportunity to enjoy breakfast and lunch dishes.

While the Epic Egg doesn’t have a brunch buffet, customers make their own by ordering a variety of items to share with one another, Moriarty explained.

“For me, brunch is an array of items. You can have eggs and fruit and sandwiches,” she said. “It’s not just one dish, it’s a little bit of something for everyone.”

Some of the most popular items brunchers order at the Epic Egg are drinks like the Good Morning Mimosa and Aloha Mimosa, the Liberty Waffle topped with sliced bananas, strawberries, blueberries and whip cream and the savory Latin dish chilaquiles that combines carnitas, homemade ranchero sauce, cotija cheese, tortilla strips and eggs with a side of black beans and Mexican rice.

The restaurant’s Boss Bacon is unlike anything offered on most breakfast menus and people often order it as an appetizer to share.

“People may try to make this but they cannot execute it,” Moriarty boasted. “Everyone is doing Million Dollar Bacon and have some version of fancier bacon. We knew what we were looking for and wanted, so we looked at those and developed our own from all of that.”

The side dish takes thick-cut applewood smoked bacon, packs it with cayenne, chili flakes, brown sugar and black pepper and then bakes it for a while before putting it on the grill to order. The bacon is then drizzled with homemade jalapeno honey.   The flavor combination of the sweet and savory spices burst in your mouth.

Sticky Bun pancakes are another popular dish for people looking to share items. The dish consists of three large fluffy pancakes topped with a brown sugar glaze, candied pecans and vanilla crème. You can opt for syrup but with the decent amount of toppings, you really don’t need it and it could be sugar overload.

The restaurant also offers vegan and healthier options.

The Awesome Avocado Toast tops thick wheat bread with fluffy whipped avocado mixed with olive oil and sea salt and topped with parsley. The Va-Va Vegan takes rustic potatoes and tops them with onion, tomato, mushrooms, Peppadew peppers, black beans, avocado and quinoa.

The Epic Egg has two locations in Greeley — 3830 W. 10th St., Suite C-1 and 2305 W. 27th St. Suite 509A — and is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
